InTouch “Changing the face of research collaboration and education”

UNITED KINGDOM, 15 May 2007 – Emerald Group Publishing Limited is pleased to announce the launch of InTouch, a web space and hosting service that supports research networking, learning, and collaboration.

Designed for Emerald’s author and editor communities, InTouch places a range of collaborative technologies and social networking tools in one simple, easy-to-use, secure space.  It can also link directly into the Emerald Management Xtra database so that users can search for articles, abstracts and research alongside InTouch blog posts, multimedia files and researcher profiles.

Amanda Briggs, Head of Research and Development at Emerald, says, “InTouch was developed with our research and contributor communities in mind.  Online technologies have had a dramatic effect on the educational and learning environment and students regularly use informal social networking sites such as MySpace and Facebook to communicate with their classmates. Now, Emerald authors and editors can take advantage of these technologies in a space that is designed specifically for the academic and business community – InTouch.  Users can create online communities based around journals or research interests, share ideas and expertise with (and learn from) their peers.  This service supports our commitment to building and facilitating communities around key management research areas.”

Emerald contributors can use InTouch to find out about forthcoming articles; create a personal blog; Share research findings and collaborate on future projects.

As well as providing networking and collaboration services, InTouch also contains tools to support students, particularly in a distance learning setting.

Glen Hardaker is Professor of Innovation Management at The University of Huddersfield and editor of Emerald’s Campus Wide Information Systems and Multicultural Education & Technology Journal. He has been working with Emerald to develop InTouch by introducing the service to support new students throughout their first term on his “ICT in Practice” degree course. Hardaker believes online services like InTouch “are changing the face of research collaboration and education.  There are a variety of tools available; yet few currently offer such a range as InTouch in one single learner-centric space.  Students can store files, blog, receive RSS feeds, record personal learning and reflection as well as communicate directly with their peers. InTouch supports the bridge between formal and informal learning.”

As Emerald seeks to enhance this service in line with the needs of its users over coming months, an online focus group will be assembled to provide regular feedback.  To join this group, please contact Anna Torrance, InTouch Market Manager (atorrance@emeraldinsight.com).

35 Emerald journals now ranked by Thompson Scientific

United Kingdom, April 2007 -  Emerald Group Publishing Limited is pleased to announce the inclusion of the Journal of Business and Industrial Marketing in the Thomson Scientific (formerly ISI) Social Sciences Citation Index.  Bringing the total number of Emerald journals listed in Thompson Scientific to 35 with a further two listed on their Current Contents Connect update service.

Whilst the journal has been covered in some of the Thomson Scientific services – such as the alerting services – for some time, it is inclusion in the Social Science Citation Index leads to the provision of a journal impact factor – deemed an important indicator of quality by much of the academic community around the world.

The Journal of Business and Industrial Marketing focuses on the ways in which companies market their products, services and ideas to other companies (B2B marketing). Disseminated both individually and as part of the Emerald Management Xtra database, it has a global audience – during 2006 articles from the journal were downloaded on no less than 175,114 occasions by users in pretty much every corner of the world.

Having just passed its 21st birthday the journal has garnered loyal support from some of the world’s leading marketing authors – recent authors have included such major figures as Christian Grönroos, Jagdish Sheth, George Day and Evert Gummesson with others such as Philip Kotler to appear in forthcoming issues.

Shelby Hunt, of Texas Tech University and past Editor of the Journal of Marketing (publication of the American Marketing Association) believes Journal of Business and Industrial Marketing to be “…at the forefront of thoughtful, informed, managerially relevant scholarship on business and industrial marketing…” Clearly factors such as these represented a telling case for the journal’s inclusion in the Social Sciences Citation Index.

Emerald currently publishes the largest single collection of marketing journals worldwide and this excellent news from Thomson Scientific means that three of these titles – European Journal of Marketing, International Marketing Review and now Journal of Business and Industrial Marketing are included in the Social Sciences Citation Index. Emerald will be making further applications for inclusion of its journals in due course.

The final word must go to Professor Wesley Johnston of Georgia State University, USA – only the second Editor the journal has had and in the post since 1993, steadily and patiently building the journal’s quality and reputation. “This is excellent news for the editorial team and for the journal’s authors – inclusion of Journal of Business and Industrial Marketing in the Social Sciences Citation Index is one more indicator that our journal’s contribution to the development of knowledge in this field is key – news like this is a great boost and another motivation to continue our progress. I would like to express my thanks to my university for its support of myself and my staff over the years – this has been a major source of encouragement.”
