A history of the extended RSS mini-Project

In the Marketing meet for 2008 I suggested that we should make more use of RSS in content delivery. We already offer Table of Contents (ToCs) in RSS formats and it seems a natural extension to offer this for other content that we deliver to the user.

A meeting with Aamir and Steve G on March 13 confirmed we could offer RSS delivery for:

  • The Weekly Digest
  • Saved Search alerts

A paper outline this proposal was forwarded to Michelle Kelly on March 23rd

RSS Enhancements for 2008

Prompts from Michelle Kelly and Amanda sugegsted I should ask Caroline Airey to officially log this onto the IT workflow (May 14th).

At the time of writing Caroline is preparing the RFC that will allow us to move this into IT's workflow.

The work itself is not thought to be major (15-20 days).

How businesses are using Web 2.0: A McKinsey Global Survey By and large, executives are satisfied with their previous investments in Internet technology, and most are investing in trends that promote automation and networking online. March 2007 Table of Contents * Introduction * Successful investments so far * What’s next? * Why Web 2.0? * Respondents’ discussion The rising popularity of user-driven online services, including MySpace, Wikipedia, and YouTube, has drawn attention to a group of technological developments known as Web 2.0. These technologies, which rely on user collaboration, include Web services, peer-to-peer networking, blogs, podcasts, and online social networks. Respondents to a recent McKinsey survey show widespread but careful interest in this trend.1 Expressing satisfaction with their Internet investments so far, they say that Web 2.0 technologies are strategic and that they plan to increase these investments. But companies aren’t necessarily relying on the best-known Web 2.0 trends, such as blogs; instead, they place the greatest importance on technologies that enable automation and networking. During an online discussion convened to dig more deeply into these results, it became clear that companies using Web 2.0 technologies have developed a new way of bringing technology into businesses. And, according to many participants, this new approach is easier to implement and more flexible than traditional top-down approaches. Discussion participants are seeing some business impact from these technologies and seem generally optimistic about their benefits, particularly in how they help a company refine its strategy. Notes 1 The McKinsey Quarterly conducted this survey in January 2007 and received responses from 2,847 executives worldwide, 44 percent of whom hold C-level positions; all data are weighted by GDP of constituent countries to adjust for differences in response rates.

These pages are designed to help Emerald staff deploy new client sites to the Emerald InTouch client domain, emeraldintouch.com.

At the time of writing, two client sites exist:

  • mdx.emeraldintouch.com
  • kentz.emeraldintouch.com

To deploy a new site, e.g newsite.emeraldintouch.com please follow these steps

  1. Request to IT/Claritas to create new sub-domain 'newsite.emeraldintouch.com' and ask that the new sub-domain points to IP address 83.138.175.85
  2. From the site files for emeraldintouch.com open the file config.php
  3. For the new site, include the following lines:
    1. if($DomainName == "newsite.emeraldintouch.com")
      {
          include('NEWSITE_config.php');
      }
    2. Save the file and upload to the site
  4. Make a copy of the file 'Original Config.php' and rename the copy to the name referred to in step 3, e.g. NEWSITE_config.php
  5. There are a number of modifications to make to the new confg file. Follow this link to discover the changes you need to make, and why InTouch Configuration File Changes for New Sites
  6. The new site will require its own template for presenting the content and site according to particular design requirements.
  7. The default template fiels are found in the site file in the folder /_templates/Default_template
  8. Make a copy of this folder and paste the copy to the folder /_templates
  9. Give the new folder a name. The name should be the same as the site, and is referred to from the modified config.php file you created in step 5.
  10. To give the site some identity edit the CSS file, intouch.css
  11. Should you wish to upload and include a logo file the file should be in the format .gif or .jpeg. The image file must be uploaded to the folder 'img/surround/'.
  12. To include the new logo, open the file 'pageshell' from your new Template folder and change the reference to 'SpacesLogo.gif' to your new image filename.

Your new EmeraldInTouch site is ready. Upload the amended files to the appropriate new folders and test by visiting

http://newsite.emeraldintouch.com

For a new Installation you will see a screen annoucing the success of the datatabase creation procedures. Scroll to the bottom of the screen to click continue to open the site.

If Wiki pages are installed then you must make one final step. You must log in as the administrator. A new installation creates the user 'news', with the password 'password'.

Log in as this user and go to the page
